When in Rome, eat like the Romans do

I'm traveling this week for work in a foodie city, Austin, TX. In addition to being weird, Austin is known for its delectable barbecue, killer Tex Mex and devoted residents who will wait just about any length of time for good eats.

So how does one navigate a town specifically known for its variety and hidden gems? Before traveling to any city I do a little recon to ensure my stay is a tasty one. Here are some tips to make sure you get the most out of your vacation (advice on traveling with kids and avoiding speed traps not included):

1. Download an app - companies like Urban Spoon use crowd-sourced data as well as business-contributed content to populate their platform. This means you'll see real-life photos, personal reviews, and valuable things like menus and specials

2. Talk to a local or avid traveler - never understand the benefit of word-of-mouth recommendations. Hit up social media to ask your friends for advice on where to go, what to expect, and what to order at their favorite spots

3. Take a flight - no, I don't mean on a plane. Plan your meal with location in mind. Three restaurants in close proximity? Hit one for apps, one for your entree and another for dessert. This is a great way to test a few places on one trip so you can contribute like your friends in step 2

Traveling is intimidating enough without worrying about the food. Make it fun and easy, make it a game! Have each person in your party bring one idea to the table to relieve the pressure and make it what dining out should be, an enjoyable experience.

A few of my fave spots in Downtown Austin so far:

- Gloria's for brunch - 6th & Lavaca
- Due Forni for brick oven pizza - 6th near Congress
- Mai Thai for cheap & healthy lunch - San Jacinto near 3rd

Here's to safe travels and good eats.
